I’ve been providing administrative support at Kaiser Permanente Martinez to Dr. Stuart Buttlaire and a team of KP Case Managers for over 12 years. Our team is responsible for providing KP Integrated Urgent Services for Northern California KP members, who need Inpatient Behavioral Health services, followed by lower level of cares, such as referrals to voluntary crisis residential programs and partial hospitalizations for further stabilization.

My career as an Office Manager/Executive Assistant spans over 30 years and none of my previous roles have been as important to me as the one I’m in now. I assist with running the back-office, so do not have contact with our members, but every referral that crosses my desk for processing speaks volumes to the needs and desperation of those suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, various eating disorders, and other mental illnesses. Knowing our team is out on the front lines working in Inpatient facilities and providing follow-up care makes them all heroes to me!

My boss, Dr. Stuart Buttlaire, has devoted his career to improving care and services to our members, while fighting to overcome the Stigma associated with mental illness.  Working beside him all these years, has been rewarding because I’ve seen the direct results of his hard work. His passion is contagious!

Growing up the Stigma was present in my family and still is. The Stigma may have been what prevented my family member from accepting treatment when recommended and offered. And now it’s too late, my family has been broken and separated by untreated Mental Health issues.

My husband and daughter both have bipolar disorder. They both know how tough their struggles are, even with treatment and support. They credit much of their success to help from professionals. I’m so grateful they are both committed to living healthy and seeking happiness. Working in KP Integrated Urgent Services has made living with their struggles easier on me, because of all the knowledge I’ve gained about mental illness while doing my job.

I do not have any “real” dance experience, but I have fun dancing with friends any chance I get! When I was asked to be a Putnam Clubhouse Dancer, I said yes even though I don’t have experience. I’ve seen the services and care provided by the Clubhouse to their members, and I wanted to be a part of keeping it successful and growing and available to those who need a little help from their friends.

JoAnne & Walter

My name is Walter, and I grew up in Southern California in the city of Los Angeles. I attended Woodrow Wilson High School in East Los Angeles. Upon graduation, I accepted admission to the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I studied theater arts, anthropology, and education.

I currently teach ballroom dancing for a living. Competitive and social dancing have become my greatest passions. I am privileged to build people’s confidence and develop their dance dreams.

My most notable accomplishments were being a recipient of the “Winner’s Circle Award” and a two-time recipient of the “Dream Team Award” for the Northwest as a top teacher/ specialist/ instructor.

When I’m not dancing, I enjoy reading about self-improvement, leadership, and metaphysics. I occasionally play video games, like Mario Kart. But…dancing is truly my passion.

Learning how to dance is the best thing you can do for your MIND, BODY, & SOUL.
